Firefox vs. Internet Explorer: It’s all perspective

Explorer Destroyer
I’ve had conversations with clients, friends and even strangers about the Mozilla Firefox browser.

Barring the ones who love Firefox, the general conception is that Firefox is inferior to Internet Explorer. I’ve stopped evangelizing people on what I believe is an incorrect hypothesis. I’ll carry on designing in Firefox and fixing it for Internet Explorer. The fight for marketshare, I’ll leave to bigger boys than me.

Firefox doesn’t work right

Basically, the gist of these conversations is ‘I tried Firefox, but am back to using Internet Explorer’.

Why?

Acid2: One year later

Acid2 smiley face
The Acid2 test for browser compliance to the W3C recommendations for web standards, namely: CSS, XHTML & PNG is now one year old. Happy Birthday.

This test was put together by the Web Standards Project aka WaSP (who by the way is sporting a fancy new page design these days). Web browsers should be able to display the smiley face correctly, as it’s simply markup and one .png image for the eyes. The markup is purposely full of many known to be buggily displayed (if supported at all) CSS1 & CSS2 features. The markup along with explanations is available.

Give your favorite (or not so favorite) browser a whirl at the Acid2 test.

Mozilla Thunderbird

Microsoft’s Outlook Express is a scarce memory to me. I have used Mozilla’s Thunderbird Email software for at least a couple of years now. I couldn’t be happier.

too much spam
What brings my ideal fantasy dream of forever using my own name as my email address crashing to the ground is the amount of spam I receive on it. I’m not sure where I went wrong. I get about 20 spam emails a day. I know that’s not alot, per se, but I wanted this email address to remain chaste forever.

Internet Keyboard

I’ve had this PC 1 1/2 years. How odd my keyboard looked this morning. I stared at the 11 button row of shortcuts across the top, like it was the first time seeing them.

  • sleep
  • images
  • music
  • video
  • hp
  • internet
  • help
  • search
  • shopping cart
  • email
  • mute

I fired up my music player with the music note. Then tried out the mute button. Pressed the email button. Tried the search. Wow. It needs some configuring, but that’s a breeze. I’m always amazed at how I (we) will continue to do things the familar way instead of embracing an easier way. Not in the vein of being lazy, just easier. I think the lazy part is actually not investing the few minutes to learn and set it up.

I told my wife about my discovery and she said, “Yeah, it’s great. That’s how I connect to the internet and get my email at work.”

Hmmm.
